STANISŁAW HERAKLIUSZ LUBOMIRSKI
(1641 – 1702)
Stanisław Herakliusz Lubomirski - Biography
Born into the family of the powerful magnate who led a rebellion against King Jan Kazimierz, Stanisław Lubomirski was educated in France, Spain, and Italy. He returned to Poland in 1662 and began his political career, becoming a deputy, Sejm Marshal (1670), and Grand Marshal of the Crown (1676). His residence at Ujazdów in Warsaw, with its own theatre, became a center of cultural and political activity.
Lubomirski's learning and literary tastes were extensive. He wrote in Latin and in Polish. His works included biblical paraphrases, e.g.,
Tobias Delivered
(1683) and
Ecclesiastes
(1702), pastoral dramas, e.g.,
Ermida, or the Shepherdess Princess
(1664), political treatises, e.g.,
De vanitate consiliorum
(1699), and religious poems, e.g.,
The Poems of Lent
.
