Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński - SONNET II - ON WORDS OF JOB:
SONNET II
ON WORDS OF JOB:
Homo natus de muliere,brevi vivens tempore, etc
Man, shamedly sired, painfully
Born, but a moment bides this earth,
Aye, midst change, misery, fear;
A shadow void of Sun, he dies.
Still from him (O God without end,
Through glory, through joy Thine own
E'er sustained), as if cov'tous, love's
Thy wont and praised Thou wouldst be.
Strange these workings of Thy mercy
Cherubs (wisdom's vast gulf) in awe
Do marvel, whilst Seraphs, flame
Most true, in joyous love burn bright.
Grant, holy Lord, but that we too had
What Thou bidst, and to Thee give it back!
Translated by Richard Sokoloski
