Mikołaj Sęp Szarzyński - SONNET III - TO THE VIRGIN MOST HOLY
SONNET III
TO THE VIRGIN MOST HOLY
Matchless Virgin, to mankind's state
Second adornment, whose meekness
Spoilt not mettle, nor station meekness,
Wondrous Mother to Thine own Maker!
Thou, sev'ring a foul serpent's head
From whose venom all earth lay ill,
O'er lofty Choirs art heavenled;
Glorious, pure bliss be Thy pleasure.
To our souls Thou seemst a true Moon,
Whence a beam we mark of endless
Mercy, as vile sin bears on us
Sorry night's ponderous shadows!
But upward, our Dawn's Morn, arise,
Thy Sun's craved light to disclose!
