I Tell You of the Joys...
I Tell You of the Joys...
I tell you of the joys,
As I compose a new song
About the heavenly Queen,
For Christian happiness.
Isaiah, our prophet,
Did a favor for us,
He made known a great joy,
Saying, "The heavenly guest will come.
He will be born of a virgin
In the image of man,
He will be true Divinity,
Save the needy from poverty.
He'll redeem us from our misery,
Not with earthly treasure,
But with his guiltless blood
He'll rescue the guilty soul.
He is a true pelican,
He'll save souls from torments,
He will let his heart bleed,
To save the sinful soul".
What the prophet had said,
The angel then announced,
That the Lord would be born,
Who would redeem the souls.
The true Holy Father
Chose Gabriel as his messenger,
To visit Nazareth,
Reveal good news to the Virgin,
Who was chosen by the heavenly
Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost,
To be the very mother
And give birth to Christ.
He hearkened to the command,
The Holy Trinity's announcement,
At once towards the Virgin
He bent down his visage.
He greeted her most humbly,
Talked with her patiently:
"Hail, Virgin, full of love,
You will bear Christ in joy.
Receive the Son of the Lord,
To the core of your heart,
You will carry him in joy,
You will bear him without pains.
You are the empress of heaven,
And Christian happiness,
You'll make the whole world rejoice,
You will not harm your virginity".
Mary spoke to him:
"I am surprised at that,
How can I have a son,
I don't want to know a man".
The angel responded to her:
"Listen to this, Our Lady,
The Holy Ghost will visit you,
Who will make it all happen.
It won't be in a human way,
The Holy Ghost will rest upon you,
His sacredness will bring it about,
It will leave your virtue with you.
Against the law of nature,
For the salvation of mankind
The Lord shows his miracles,
He doesn't want to destroy his people.
What He conceived in eternity,
To save his people from woe,
He achieved on this day,
He sent me to you with this message.
Deign not to refuse it,
You will be the Mother of God,
You delay man's salvation,
Carry it to completion.
I will give you a wondrous example,
For the Lord himself told me to,
Elizabeth is with child,
She will give birth to Saint John.
Although barren, she conceived,
For in the Lord she believed,
Though for the people improbable,
For God all things are possible.
Hail, Mary full of love,
Free us from our sorrows,
Give thanks to Him warm-heartedly,
And lessen human troubles".
Mary said these words to him:
"I give thanks to my Lord,
That He is willing to
Perform this miracle in me.
I am His true servant,
I am open to this guest,
The Son of the living God,
That saved us from all evil".
Let us sing it with great joy,
Because it has a lot of good,
In every decent soul
The heart will move towards God.
At the end of this song,
For the salvation of all,
Give happiness, health, o Lord,
And good death at the end.
To those who will sing it
Or will listen to it,
Deign to give them, o Lord,
Whatever they want from you.
Translated by Michael J. Mikoś
Note
The epic song about the annunciation of the Virgin Mary (
Radości wam powiedam
) has been preserved in two variants. We are publishing here the text recorded in the manuscript from the Warsaw National Library (call number III 8040), which came from the monastic library of the Lateran Canons in Kraśnik. This manuscript contains the sermons of Jacob de Voragine written by Piotr of Pabianice, corrected and supplemented by Jakub of Czapla. It was at that time, or not much later, when the text of the song was recorded together with the music. The second rendition of the poem comes from the now lost collection called "Pieśni łysogórskie", written down after 1470 by Andrzej of Słupia in the Benedictine monastery of the Saint Cross on Łysa Góra Mountain. Dating of the poem: first half of the fifteenth century.
