Anonym (XVI c.)
Anonym - Induction of Mary, Humble Purification...
Induction of Mary, Humble Purification...
Induction of Mary
Humble purification,
Celebrate it today,
Therefore let us all sing:
The Virgin came out of the stable,
Offered Jesus to God in the temple.
On the fortieth day the Virgin
Having taken her Son
Came out of that place,
To the Lord's temple.
The Virgin came out of the stable...
The old righteous Simeon,
On whom the Spirit rested,
Came into the temple then,
Inflamed by devotion.
The Virgin came out of the stable...
He cried out, kneeling down:
"You are the sovereign Son of God,
Deign to come to my soul,
Do not leave your servant.
The Virgin came out of the stable...
No more do I wish to live,
When my eyes have seen you,
The Eternal Being,
For which I wished long since".
The Virgin came out of the stable...
Jesus looked at his mother,
He reached out with his hands,
For he wished to join the old man,
He wished to console him.
The Virgin came out of the stable...
Simeon took him in his arms,
He wept with great joy,
Embracing, he kissed him,
He was shedding countless tears.
The Virgin came out of the stable...
"Dear Jesus, the sweetest,
Life and food for the soul,
Allow me to die today,
Permit me to die at once".
The Virgin came out of the stable...
After preparing herself
And readying a sacrifice,
The Virgin with Joseph
Humbly approached the altar.
The Virgin came out of the stable...
She said, while kneeling down,
"Most holy God the Father,
This is Your one and only Son,
Receive him for man's sins.
The Virgin came out of the stable...
For the time and hour will come,
When on the wood of the cross
The Son of my bosom
Will suffer for the sinful".
The Virgin came out of the stable...
Joseph put two turtledoves
In the hands of Mary,
To offer for her Son,
And kept the Law of the Lord.
The Virgin came out of the stable...
Jesus stretched out together
His little hands, offering them
In keeping with his poverty
And the Law of the Lord.
The Virgin came out of the stable...
Afterwards Virgin Mary
Redeemed her dear Son
From the priest of the Lord
With a coin offering.
The Virgin came out of the stable...
The Mother was consoled,
When she took hold of her Son,
Kissing and cuddling him,
Think of it, dear soul!
The Virgin came out of the stable...
Pure Virgin Mary,
You are the true Mother of God,
Be merciful to us today,
Allow us to care for your Son.
The Virgin came out of the stable...
Jesus, most dear Child,
Through your offering
Forgive our transgressions,
Allow us to see you in heaven.
The Virgin came out of the stable,
Offered Jesus to God in the temple.
Translated by Michael J. Mikoś
Note
The song comes from the manuscript
Kancjonał kórnicki
(1550-1555), at present in the collection of the Polish Academy of Science Library in Kórnik (call number 44). It probably originated in the first half of the sixteenth century. The text is preceded by an instruction: "This song should be sung to the same tune as one sings the song of Christmas". The song is intended for the holiday of the Purification of the Virgin Mary and the Offering of Jesus Christ.
