Anonym - A Pure Little Flower, Consolation of a Weary Heart...
A Pure Little Flower, Consolation of a Weary Heart...

A pure little flower, consolation
Of a weary heart, of virginal kind.
And why are we mournful,
When this Virgin brings joy,
And to those pierced by death
Eternal consolation?
A little white flower is a lily,
And this Virgin was called Mary.
And why are we mournful...

A little red flower - rose beyond the sea,
And this Lovely Virgin is the heavenly queen.
And why are we mournful...

A little green flower, it became changed,
And this lovely Virgin prays for us to Jesus.
And why are we mournful...
A little blue flower is a violet,
She destroyed the bolts of Hell's gates.
And why are we mournful

A little black flower is humility,
She led us to the heavenly choir.
And why are we mournful...

Thereby, Virgin, through your loveliness,
You will lead us to heavenly joyfulness.
And why are we mournful...

Notes
The song (
Kwiatek czysty, smutnego sierca ucieszenie...
) is known only from a copy made by Wojciech Kętrzyński from an unknown manuscript. The song was composed most likely in the second half of the fifteenth century. We quote it from the edition by Władysław Nehring,
Altpolnische Sprachdenkmaeler. Systematische Uebersicht, Würdigung und Texte. Ein Beitrag zur Slavischen Philologie
, Berlin: 1886, pp. 295-296.
